International Summer School and United Nations Vesak Day Conference

International Summer School: Buddhism into the 21st Century

The University of Hamburg and the Center for Buddhist Studies are delighted to invite students from all fields to participate in the International Summer School 2008: Buddhism into the 21st Century.

The program starts off with a general introduction into Buddhism (its history and practice), to be followed by an in-depth examination of special topics, including its arrival in Western culture.

An international team of renowned and young academics will present the complex topics in a scholarly but easily comprehendible manner. Students of all faculties will receive, upon successful completion of the seminar, one Credit Point.  In Brief:

  • The interdisciplinary program is explicitly designed for students from all fields of study
  • Students of all faculties receive one Credit Point  (equivalent of 30 h ECTS) upon successful completion of the seminar
  • The summer university is an international course whose purpose is to encourage intercultural exchange
  • Specialized knowledge is not required for participation.

United Nations Vesak Day Conference
The fifth United Nations Day of Vesak (UNDV) is to be held in Hanoi, Vietnam from 13-17th May in 2008. The celebrations are expected to draw a gathering of 4500—including Buddhist leaders from all traditions, leading scholars, state dignitaries and practitioners from around the world.

The celebrations will cover Spiritual, Academic, Cultural and Religious aspects.  Papers are now being invited for the Conference. We welcome your contributions on the following themes:

Main Theme: Buddhist Contribution to building a Just, Democratic and Civil Society.  Sub Themes include:

  • War, Conflict and Healing: A Buddhist Perspective
  • Buddhist Contribution to Social Justice
  • Engaged Buddhism and Development
  • Care for Our Environment: Buddhist Response to Climate Change
  • Family Problems and the Buddhist Response
  • Symposium on Buddhist Education: Continuity and Progress
  • Symposium on Buddhism in the Digital Age
