Sri Lanka Association for Buddhist Studies Conference

Dear list members,

The Sri Lanka Association for Buddhist Studies (SLABS) is pleased to announce that its re-scheduled 2nd Biannual International Conference will be held in November 17 -19, 2006 at the University of Peradeniya, Kandy.

Call for Papers:
Paper presentations and proposals for panel discussions are invited in any subject area connected with Buddhist studies. Early submission of abstracts is encouraged; the deadline for submission of abstracts is September 30, 2006. Although every effort will be made to copy and distribute papers which are submitted late, please try to submit completed papers before October 20 to ensure distribution to all participants.

Conference Site:
The University of Peradeniya has been recognized as one of the most beautiful and architecturally accomplished campuses in all of Asia. It is located 7 km away from Kandy, the ancient hill capitol of Ceylon and the location of the Buddhist pilgrimage site, _The Dalada Maligawa_ (Temple of the Tooth Relic). The University of Peradeniya is the flagship institution of higher learning in Sri Lanka and annually receives the highest ranking for the achievements of its scholars in wide variety of disciplines.

Area Studies:
Tours to historic sites in the Island (i.e. Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya and other sites) will be arranged for those who wish to extend their stay beyond the period of the conference.

Tradition and Change: Future of Buddhist Studies in the Region

SLABS:
The Sri Lanka Association for Buddhist Studies is a professional body of academics in the field of Buddhist studies and has been in existence since 2002. In addition to the bi-annual International Conference, SLABS publishes a newsletter thrice a year and organizes mini-conferences, seminars, workshops, and guest lectures in Sri Lanka's higher educational institutions. Registration Fee:
 US $100 Foreign participants; US $10 Participants from SAARC countries; Rs 1000 Local Particpants

Accommodation and Travel:
During the three days of the conference, all participants will be provided with accommodation, meals, refreshments, conference materials, and a copy of the booklet of abstracts. Participants should register on or before October 17, 2006. Travel to Kandy from the airport/Colombo and return will be arranged by SLABS. Documentation to fulfill visa requirements can be provided upon request.
