The Appreciation and Interpretation of Zen Art

Professor John Stevens will present a talk on 'The Appreciation
and Interpretation of Zen Art.' He will discuss how painting and
calligraphy are used as teaching vehicles in Zen Buddhism. He
will show actual examples of Zen art to illustrate the unique
characteristics of this style of brushwork, and how to
appreciate the 'Zen Mind' as expressed through the 'Zen Brush'.
John Stevens is Professor of Buddhist Studies at Tohoku
University in Sendai, Japan. He has been living in Japan since
1973, and is an ordained Soto Zen priest. Professor Stevens has
written or translated nearly 40 books on various aspects of
Asian culture including Sacred Calligraphy of the East
and Zenga: Brushstrokes of Enlightenment. He wrote the
entries for the 'Zen Mind, Zen Brush' exhibition opening in
Sydney on June 17 Zen Mind,
Zen Brush Professor Steven's
visit to Sydney has been sponsored by VisAsia, the Australian
Institute of Asian Culture and the Visual Arts, for the
exhibition ZEN MIND ZEN BRUSH at the Art Gallery of New South
Wales, and the accompanying symposium on Saturday 17th June.
